Agree 다양한 의미 제대로 알기 (with,on,to,to do, about etc)

Agree 동의하다라는 뜻인 건 많은 분들이 알고 계실 겁니다. 보통 ~에 동의한다는 우리말 표현이 있기 때문에 Agree with정도까지는 많은 분들에게 익숙한 표현이라고 아닐까 해요. 저도 이번에 공부하면서 더 자세히 알아볼 기회를 가졌습니다.

그러면 Agree의 다양한 뜻을 한 번 파헤쳐 봅시다!!

 

1.  If you agree with someone about / on something

☞ you have the same opinion as them (같은 의견을 가진 경우 사용합니다)

 

A. I agree with you.

 

B. “She's definitely the right person for the job.”  “Yes, I agree.”

 

C. We all agreed that we needed to improve our English. (note: this means ‘We all agreed with each other that we needed to improve our English.’) -빨간색 색칠한 부분이 생략된 형태에요.

 

D. My husband and I agree about /on most things. (note: this means ‘My husband and I agree with each other about /on most things.) - 여기도 마찬가지로 빨간색 색칠한 부분이 생략된 형태구요

 

 

2. If you agree to do something

☞ you say you will do something that someone asks you to do. (누군가 나에게 부탁한 것을 할 경우에)

 

A. She agreed to help him.

 

B. My boss has agreed to give me a holiday! (직장에서 내가 상사에게 휴가를 청했고 상사가 이에 동의했다는 말이죠)

 

3. If you agree to something 

☞ you give your permission for it. (2번이랑 의미는 비슷하지만 동사의 의미가 강조된 형태고, agree to+명사의 형태로서 명사가 강조됐다고 보시면 될 듯 합니다

 

A. My boss has agreed to my holiday dates.   My holiday dates가 명사

 

B. His father did not agree to the idea of a big birthday party. The Idea가 명사

 

 

4. If two or more people agree on something, or agree to do something 

☞it means that they decide something together. (2명 이상의 사람이 무언가를 함께 결정했을 때) 

 

A. We couldn't agree on what to buy. 

 

B. They agreed to meet on Sunday.

 

사실 빠른 대화가 오가는 상황에서 Agree on이냐 to냐 순간적으로 판단해서 말하기는 쉽지 않죠. 이런 것들이 감에 의존하는 듯 합니다.

 

5. If two or more parties (that is, two or more people, countries, companies, etc.) agree something

 

☞ it means that they reach a formal agreement about it. (공식적인 합의에 도달했을 경우)

Then, this agreement is often written into a contract, treaty or plan. (이러한 합의는 서면의 형태로 종종 작성된다고 함) 

 

A. The government agreed a plan to tackle the economic crisis.

 

B. The two companies agreed a way forward in their dispute.

 

 

6. If two descriptions of something agree

☞ they are the same. (서로 같을 경우)

 

 

A. I have heard several versions of this story, but none of them agree. (한 이야기가 여러 버전 있는데 같은 건 없다는 말이에요)

B. Police could not locate the criminal because none of the descriptions given by the witnesses agreed. (목격자 진술이 다수 존재하지만 일치되는게 없어서 경찰이 결정을 내리지 못한다는 이야기죠. 목격자 진술이 일치해야 신빙성이 있는데 다 다르니까요)

 

 

7. In grammar if a subject and verb agree

 

it means they have the correct grammatical form. If they don’t agree, then the grammar in that sentence is wrong.

(문법이 제대로 맞는 문장을 말할 때도 Agree란 표현을 사용하네요)

 

예) In the sentence “She like studying English”, the subject and the verb don’t agree. It should say “She likes studying English”. (주어가 3인칭 단수일 경우 동사에 s나 es를 붙여야 되는데 그렇지 않기 때문에 don't agree란 표현을 사용한 경우네요)
